Popular Mechanics, that magazine that has been teaching people about cutting-edge technologies from around the world for decades, now offers a variety of plans within its pages which will surely help any amateur mechanic or engineer to learn the ropes of various building projects. Relatively recently they developed plans to build a classically styled porch glider which can place on your porch for an incredibly comfortable seating arrangement. For around five hundred dollars, they were able to make a real, working porch glider that was large enough to seat two fully grown adults or several small children comfortably. While many people reading this article will already know what a porch glider is, the chances are that there are a few who do not – essentially a plane is a cross between a swing and a rocking chair and it uses a variety of mechanisms to simulate the motion of a swing while still being firmly seated on the ground.
If you are interested in building your very own glider, there are a few necessary tools that you will undoubtedly need. You will also need some other devices such as a band saw, table saw and drill press for the best possible results from your homemade glider. Although all of these tools are generally required, if you find that you have a steady enough hand, you can probably get away with not needing a drill press. Once you have assembled all of the tools you need, you will have to figure out what type of wood you will want to use for your custom made porch glider. While the most popular model is undoubtedly mahogany, you can generally make such a seat out of just about any wood so long as it will be strong enough to hold two full sized adults. After all of the preparation has been completed, you can start work on the porch glider per Popular Mechanic’s instructions.
