When designing a bathroom don't neglect the importance of the overall decor. It's a small room that rarely makes the first impression and is so often overlooked by homeowners. But the design of the bathroom should lend itself to a specific decor. A shower is an essential tool used in establishing the overall value of your home. A well-designed bathroom that has a tasteful decor can make or break the resale value of your home.
So much effort put into the plumbing, the dimensions, the hardware that goes into building a bathroom and making it all work together that the little finishing touches that actually define the space and make it personal receive lower priority and are often quick decisions or afterthoughts. The little details are critically important to establishing the overall 'feel' of the room. We put a lot of thoughts into the cabinets that go into our bathrooms but very little into the knobs for them. The only reason many of us get knobs is that they are required to open the cabinets. These small details are vital to the functionality of the bathroom and crucial to the decor.
Something else to consider when attending to the more 'minor' details such as bathroom decor is the tone you wish the room to take. You don't want to ruin the potential tranquility of a bathroom designed or intended for relaxation by adding busy fixtures, loud colors, and distracting art. You also don't want to have boring fixtures, tile, and art in a bathroom that has painted with vibrant, lively colors. Choose the 'tone' you want your bathroom to take before attending to the actual choosing of decorations. Most importantly though, you want to create a room that your family and your guests can feel comfortable.
One final thing you want to remember about designing bathrooms and bathroom decor is that you are the one that ultimately has to live with the decor you chose. You should try to pick something that is reflective of your tastes and styles. Picked a flow that works with your desired use of the room. Don't overshadow the personality of your family in pursuit of a certain look. Know that while a bathroom that tastefully and elegantly designed and decorated can significantly improve the value of your home, there is no way to anticipate the tastes of every person that graces the door of your bathroom. Designing a room can be challenging, as can choosing the decor, more than anything, both should be fun.
