LoveMyGuinness - The Sport Of Geocaching

The Sport of Geocaching by: LoveMyGuinness

***This post was written for the CacheCrazy.Com Geocaching Blog.***

Yes, I said sport, because if you're doing it correctly, it's real work. I do, very much, believe that there is a right way and a wrong way to Cache. I have an unfathomable love for the sport, but that love is not unconditional. I'm covering two very important aspects here that seem to be overlooked frequently. Cache Ownership & Placement and Tradeable Goodies.

This is an example of a regular run of the mill cache.
A logbook and some other random crap that no one wants to keep.

After hunting this dangerous thing, I cannot begin to explain how disappointed my kids were at the items inside. Guys, you can do better than this! Regular cache maintenance is a MUST. I wish more people cared about it. Geocache Ownership is NOT about numbers. It's aboutQUALITY. Who cares if you've placed 65 caches, if they all look like this crap? That's a waste.

What's even worse is when I pull up to a cache and this is what I see... Really? Are you that hard up for a fix that you would diminish the very essence of Geocaching just to place some container in this slum hole so you can find it while you shop? For real? Yum. Just what I want to do with my family on a day off. Sift through garbage to find more garbage. The contents of the cache at this site were atrocious. A broken keychain, an eraser and a parachuting santa toy from 1980.
Geocaching, ideally, should be about discovering new amazing places that you didn't know about or haven't explored yet. They should contain things that people want to trade. This is how I enjoy seeing my family cache. Notice there aren't garbage piles, furniture dumps or broken glass.

These are places that I want my family to see....
They were well chosen by their Cache Owners for their beauty...

How could you not want to Cache in an awe-inspiring place like this?
Or this?
These are places that I want my family to remember.
These are the memories I am building for my children.
These are the areas that we need to protect and cherish.
I consider myself a fairly responsible Cache Owner. While I only own four, they are each placed with loving care for a reason. They are places my family enjoys and that we'd like to share with others. When they were placed, they were stuffed to the gills with brand new goodies. You don't need to spend a fortune for Tradeable Items. $20 at the Dollar Store will make you look like a hero. Check up on your caches every few weeks to bulk up the goodies, because sadly, there are way too many people who don't use the honor system. Brand new l.e.d. flashlight for a business card? Sometimes people make me shake my head in complete confusion.
These were the first 6 caches that we ever assembled and you know what?
We emptied 2 of them and divided the extra goodies amongst the other containers.
Why? ...

Because THESE are the people that are finding your caches.
I keep my caches as I would like my children to find them.
Full of Awesomeness and Adventure.

Please. Don't ruin their memories.

What a good post and oh boy do I agree with it. There's nothing worse than the roadside dump full of rubbish, some dangerous and smelly. I love to get out in the countryside with a bit of energy is required and new beautiful places to find. Thanks LoveMyGuinness.

Oh man, you know I just love this post! Shell, you send a very clear message here. Many cachers ask me why I'm only putting out a few here and there. I have my hands full with maintaining them so I only do what I know I can maintain. Maybe not always on top of everything but, regular efforts are made to keep the treasure in the treasure hunt.
Thanks Shell for the guest blog, it's even better the second time around:)

There is a sig line from a cacher in a local forum that sums this up nicely:

"when you place a cache don't place it so that people are going to find the cache. place it so that they get to experience the location it is hidden at. "

Personally I could care less if anything is in a cache, except a good logbook, when I find it. But I really want them to be in interesting locations, or if not, at least interesting hides, and if not, at least interesting containers.

That's a long winded way of saying "It's about the journey, not the destination." I stand by this post, my feelings have not changed. :)

Nice job Shell. This is a real problem that I see. Too many COs not doing the proper job of maintaining their caches. As Dave said, take me to a neat location or give me a neat container. I'm willing to step up to the plate and keep my caches loaded, well placed, and in neat locations. Who's with me? Cacheoorah! (Sort of the Oorah of the Marines, but for Geocachers.)

Sure the "geo" is about the journey and then the final destination. But the game we play is geoCACHING. So IT IS ALSO about the CACHE itself. Caches should be camouflaged, cleverly hidden, and well-stocked. So I guess I'm saying make sure you put the CACHE in GEOCACHE. Otherwise it's just a walk in the woods.

Good article.

Oh yes, Geocaching! So many different ways to play, awesome destinations, exciting journeys, to see a kid open a cache and find a treasure, the creativity in the hide and the wonderful people you meet with such interesting perspectives. This post and all the interaction today is why I love CacheCrazy.Com!
All excellent comments!
Let's do it all weekend!
I'll kick it off with coffee in the morning....
Nite:)

I love geocaching and dragging my poor other half along, i am the gocacher in the home but secretly i think he is a closet cacher. "winks"
I hold my hand up and admit that the first few times i found "tat" in a cache i did replace it with the sme. But now i have been caching a while i have learnt more. I like to find a nice log and maybe a TB or two, and if i think i am able to do so, then i will move a TB on. I will add a new fresh log to the cache if it is needed if the original is full or soaking. I now don't carry "tat" in my bag but one or two "nice" pieces that i hope someone will like.

We were shocked to find in a cache of mine when we checked it yesterday, a bank debit card! Well in date, name on the front account details, and unsigned on the back! We brought it home and handed it in to the bank today. Can I ask? Can I see a TB number on the TB in the photo further up the page?

My Story . . . .
As a natural born skeptic, I spent countless time and energy researching all the available treatment options aside from what my oncologist recommended. I was DETERMINED to cure my cancer, and knew there was something out there after witnessing a number of people who not only survived, but thrived and went on to live fulfilling lives cancer-free. In addition to reading about Rick Simpson Oil, and watching the Run From the Cure video, I also spoke with people who had actually used the oil, and it was shocking to hear one after another how effective this medicine really was. I just couldn’t believe there was a cure out there and how wrong it was that this information is not being shared with the public!

Treatment Regimine:
I have a pretty big tolerance for marijuana, so I started off with a full grain of rice sized amount of oil instead of a half grain. I gradually increased the dosage every night until I reached a full gram each night. The standard protocol for Rick Simpson Oil is ingesting a total of 60 grams over the course of 2-3 months, but I had 70 grams in total for safe measure. I used the excess as a topical skin care treatment, attacking the visible brown spots on my face and neck.

3 months later, my cancer was in full remission. Within 4 months, I am cancer-free and officially received a clean bill of health from my doctors. What they don’t know is that the majority of my treatment was using the Rick Simpson Oil. I did use some of the medication they prescribed, but it was in combination with the oil.

I am elated I want to continue sharing with people who are experiencing what I went through that there is absolutely hope and a cure out there. They just need to be proactive and aggressive with treatment, not wait until it is too late. Get your medication at Phoenix Tears via Email: phoenixtears44@gmail.com

In addition to being an effective cancer fighter, there are some nice side effects that come from using the Rick Simpson oil, for instance, I no longer need to take any pain killers. Just one or two drops of the oil will ease the pain and help you sleep like a baby. Best of all, its natural . . . Thanks to all the staff at Amsterdam’s Garden who guided me throughout this journey. You guys are awesome!
