A Holiday Trip West

As I often proudly mention, I am from the small Northcentral town of St. Marys, Pennsylvania.  We are thrilled to now live in the beautiful area around the Francis E. Walter Dam, the true gateway to the Poconos, and I don’t believe we could be any more fortunate, but there’s nothing like an enjoyable holiday weekend back home.  It’s a nice little town nestled in the Allegheny Mountains.  It’s an outdoor lover’s dream, and for us geocachers, only a short hour or so drive to this year’s Geowoodstock event.
On Saturday, I wanted to get my Dad out for one of the last days of spring gobbler season.  We had an absolute ball.  I was able to call two gobblers in, but they just wouldn’t quite get close enough.  For two hours we watched them strut and listened to them gobble and drum before they finally lost interest.  It was a real treat seeing them put on a show.  Even better, I luckily had my camera with me.  Look what we stumbled upon on our walk back to the house.  It’s easily one of the best wildlife pictures I’ve ever taken…

Later in the afternoon, my Mom, brother, and sister saddled up the horses for a trail ride.  This is the big event for our daughter Annalie when we head to “Grandma and Pops” house.  Here they are all ready to go…

Sunday we picnicked at one of Pennsylvania’s gems – Clear Creek State Park.  Clear Creek State Park, Clear Creek State Forest, the Clarion River, and the Allegheny National Forest all run together here.  The dammed creek water was ice cold, but our kids loved it.  Annalie landed a trout and we of course had to snag some geocaches while we were there.  Our youngest daughter Sadie had fun checking out the old-growth trees in the park…

Monday was spent enjoying the St. Marys Memorial Day parade before we finally had to call it a weekend.  Of course, too, a trip to St. Marys wouldn't be complete without generous servings of refreshing Straub Beer.  Maybe I'm biased, but I think it's the best.
It was a fun holiday, and I hope many folks consider a vacation to this beautiful region of the Commonwealth.  And like I said, it’s right near this year’s Geowoodstock!!

Great article and fantastic pictures. This is an area I will be going to next month for the GeoWoodstock. I can't wait to see some of the beautiful sites that are there. I only hope I can see some wildlife like you saw. Great job and I'm glad you had a great time.
